Job Summary:
Buckeye Online seeks a dynamic and knowledgeable K-8 Math Coach to support virtual teachers in delivering rigorous, conceptually-grounded mathematics instruction aligned to Ohio’s Learning Standards for Mathematics. This role is critical to ensuring all K-8 students develop deep mathematical understanding, procedural fluency, and problem-solving skills in our online learning environment. The Math Coach will provide professional development, instructional support, collaborative planning, and data-driven coaching to improve student math outcomes. The candidate will also provide instruction/intervention in a small group setting.
Key Responsibilities:
Professional Development & Teacher Support
● Design and deliver professional development on effective mathematics instruction, including number sense, operations, algebraic thinking, measurement, data, and geometry aligned to Ohio’s Learning Standards for Mathematics
● Provide one-on-one coaching and mentoring to teachers to strengthen mathematical pedagogy and instructional delivery in virtual settings
● Model effective mathematics instruction through demonstration lessons and recorded examples
● Support teachers in adapting math instruction for diverse learners, including struggling mathematicians and advanced learners
● Coach teachers on implementing the Standards for Mathematical Practice and Ohio’s Learning Standards for Mathematics
Curriculum & Instruction
● Collaborate with teachers to align mathematics curriculum to Ohio’s Learning Standards for Mathematics and grade-level competencies
● Review and recommend high-quality mathematics resources, manipulatives, and digital tools appropriate for virtual instruction
● Support implementation of research-based mathematics frameworks emphasizing conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and application
● Assist in adapting small group instruction, problem-solving activities, and math centers for online delivery
● Support the use of concrete, representational, and abstract (CRA) instructional strategies in virtual environments
Assessment & Data Analysis
● Analyze student mathematics assessment data (formative assessments, benchmark assessments, skill inventories) to identify learning gaps and strengths
● Support teachers in using assessment data to differentiate instruction and target interventions
● Help develop and refine mathematics assessment practices appropriate for virtual learning
● Track student progress and communicate findings to administrators and teachers
● Support teachers in identifying and supporting students with dyscalculia or mathematics anxiety
Collaboration & Communication
● Facilitate grade-level and cross-grade collaborative planning sessions focused on mathematics instruction
● Support the creation of mathematics units and lesson plans aligned to Ohio’s standards and mathematical practices
● Communicate regularly with teachers, administrators, and families about mathematics initiatives and student progress
● Participate in curriculum review and curriculum development processes
Virtual Learning Best Practices
● Model strategies for delivering engaging, interactive mathematics instruction in virtual settings
● Support teachers in leveraging manipulatives, virtual tools, and technology for online math instruction
● Troubleshoot challenges related to mathematics instruction in online environments
● Stay current with best practices in online mathematics instruction and emerging mathematical technologies
Preferred Qualifications:
● Master’s degree in Mathematics Education, Secondary Mathematics Education, or a related field (or bachelor’s degree with state mathematics specialist certification)
● Valid Ohio teaching license in Mathematics or Secondary Mathematics (K-8) or equivalent
● Clean FBI/BCI background check
● Valid Ohio teaching license in Mathematics or Secondary Mathematics (K-8)
● Minimum 5 years of classroom teaching experience at the K-8 level, with demonstrated success in mathematics instruction
● Professional coaching or instructional coaching experience (2+ years preferred)
● Strong knowledge of Ohio’s Learning Standards for Mathematics and alignment practices
● Proficiency with mathematics assessment tools and data analysis
● Experience supporting diverse learners, including English language learners and students with math difficulties
● Proficiency with virtual meeting platforms and learning management systems
● Experience with math intervention programs
● Familiarity with virtual classroom management and online student engagement strategies
● Experience with professional learning communities (PLCs/TBTs) and collaborative coaching models
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
● Expert-level knowledge of mathematics pedagogy and the Standards for Mathematical Practice
● Deep understanding of number sense, operations, algebraic thinking, and other core mathematics concepts
● Ability to provide constructive, non-evaluative coaching and feedback
● Strong facilitation and presentation skills
● Exceptional written and verbal communication abilities
● Problem-solving and adaptability in virtual learning contexts
● Time management and organizational skills
● Proficiency with virtual meeting platforms, Google Tools, and willingness to learn new platforms
